Quad Bike Parts and Accessories - A Beginner's Guide
Quad bikes, also known as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), are fantastic machines for exploring the outdoors and tackling tough terrain.
Just like any vehicle, they can be enhanced with a variety of accessories to improve the riding experience, safety, and functionality.
Here are the three essential areas you should focus on first:
Safety first
Just because you’re on four-wheels, doesn’t mean you shouldn't be kitted up correctly. Invest in proper riding gear like goggles, gloves, sturdy boots, and a riding jacket and trousers.
The same goes for a helmet. Although there is no legal requirement to wear one when riding a quad on the road in the UK it’s definitely recommended. Choose a suitable design for the type of riding you’ll be doing, and make sure it’s from a reputable manufacturer and CE-approved.
Storage for the essentials
Cargo racks and specialist quad luggage provides the ability to carry tools, spare parts, extra riding gear, camping kit and more.
If you can’t stretch to that, then a motorcycle tail bag or rucksack is well worth investing in, to carry emergency supplies like food and drink; especially if you’re planning to take your ATV off the beaten track.
Quad Bike Spares and Repairs
When deciding what to pack in that luggage, a priority should be a few spares and tools to help get you back moving should you have a breakdown.
A puncture repair kit and pump is the obvious one, but also think about carrying components that can break during tough off-road terrain, such as brake levers and pedals, and clutch levers - and the tools you’ll need to replace them.
It’s also well worth carrying a universal cable repair kit, since control cables come under increased pressure when tackling rough routes and trails.
Stay connected
A phone mount is another must have, as it allows you to use GPS navigation, and have your phone to hand in case of a breakdown or emergency - again, this is particularly important if you’re planning on riding into remote areas and over rough terrain.
Make sure it’s waterproof and that it both holds your phone firmly in place and protects it from flying stones, debris and branches etc.
It will also need to attach to your quad’s handlebars securely, to prevent it flying off on rough stretches of trail.
Quad Bike Attachments
-
Handguards - Keep hands and controls protected from flying dirt, debris, branches and from contact with other bikes. They also do a good job of shielding against wind and rain.
-
Lights - Upgraded headlight bulbs or even auxiliary spotlights and taillights are worth considering, to increase what you can see ahead and to make sure other quad/motorcycle riders can see you too.
-
Wheels and tyres - If you plan on tackling specific terrains like mud, sand, or snow, you might want to consider specific tyres.
-
Cables and hoses - Control cables and hoses can take a real beating on off-road terrain, so it’s worth upgrading to braided hydraulic lines, to reduce the risk of damage occurring due to contact with stones, branches etc. The same goes for cables; consider fitting high quality cables like Venhill’s Featherlight spec, which have high quality marine-grade stainless steel inner wire and are ‘Bird-caged’ to reduce the risk of breakage. They also figure a PTFE ‘teflon’ liner, which removes the need for regular lubrication.
Remember: Always choose accessories that you know are suited to your specific quad bike model, and when budgeting, prioritise accessories and add-ons that increase safety first.
