Venhill Roadside Cable Repair Kit

Control cables have a hard life. They get a lot of use on every ride and over time they can rust, fray, stretch and generally degrade, particularly if they are not maintained - and how many riders regularly check and clean their cables?

When a cable snaps, it will bring a ride to an abrupt halt. The good news is that it’s relatively simple to make a roadside repair and get yourself going again. It also saves waiting for recovery services or a mate with a van/trailer to rescue you.

What you will need

How to use a Venhill Roadside Cable Repair Kit

  1. Fix cables to the twistgrip / lever.

  2. Fit cables to the bike. Carefully check the route. Make sure nothing traps or squashes the cables. (Do not cut cables to length at this stage)

  3. Select the correct ends to suit your bike.

  4. Remove the inner wires from the outer cable. Ensure the bars move freely from lock to lock without pulling on the cable, cut the outer cable to the required length.

  5. Select the correct nipples for your bike and fit them to the pulley / lever. Now pass the wire through the nipples. Allow about 5mm of slack.

  6. Before cutting inner wires, check it all again. Cut wires.

  7. Secure nipples to cable using the solderless nipples provided.

  8. Refit nipples to the pulley / lever and adjust cables as necessary.

  9. THROTTLES. Before starting the engine, ensure that there is a crisp return to the idle position. With the engine running and in neutral, test the throttle action. Ensure that there is a crisp return to idle. Test this moving the bars from lock to lock. CLUTCHES. Before starting the engine, check for the correct operation of the clutch.

  10. When totally satisfied with the operation, test the bike in motion in a safe location.

Broken motorcycle cables – prevention is better than cure

A simple way to reduce the risk of broken cables is to upgrade to Venhill Featherlight cables. Manufactured in our UK factory using a low-friction PTFE ‘teflon’ liner and marine-grade stainless steel wire to prevent corrosion and minimise stretch, performance and durability are assured. Plus the end of the inner wire is expanded into a "bird-cage" shape before the nipple is soldered on. This allows the solder to penetrate the weave of the cable, making the bond incredibly strong and preventing the nipple from pulling off under stress.
