Motorcycle coloured conduit

Venhill has introduced a colourful new concept to speed up production of motorcycle control cables at its UK factory.

In addition to standard black, Venhill produces control cables with six alternative colour options for the protective outer conduit. They also come in three different diameters, (to suit clutch and throttle applications).

Recognising that selecting different colour components - often within one order - was adding time and complexity to the manufacturing process, the team at Venhill decided to streamline the operation. They reorganised the conduit cutting area at their Dorking factory into a more dedicated function and bought six new moveable shelf trolleys from Rapid Racking, which were then colour-coded to match the relevant conduit range.

“This seemingly simple addition gives the production team swift access to the full range of sizes in each colour, without the need for multiple trips to separate containers” explains Operations Manager Martin Bradfield.

Black conduit, the ‘standard’ colour option for most makes and models, is stored in a static bay next to the conduit cutting machine, for instant access.

As part of the overhaul, the conduit cutting machine has been refurbished, to ensure that both speed and accuracy is maintained.

“For British manufacturers to compete in the global market, we have to offer quality and service” says Managing Director Simon Kennedy. “We’ve enjoyed sustained growth over recent years and the busier you get the more important it becomes to improve efficiency, so you can keep up with demand”.

Founded over 50 years ago, by an avid off-road rider who wanted to make durable cables for motocross bikes, Venhill continues to develop and manufacture top quality motorcycle cables in the UK. Featuring components such as marine-grade stainless steel inner wire and PTFE ‘teflon’ liners to minimise friction, they’re also ‘Bird-caged' – a special process applied to the end of the inner cable wire, which allows solder to penetrate the weave of the cable, making the bond with the nipple much stronger.

Cables are available in a choice of black, blue, green, grey, orange, red and yellow, as well as the recently introduced grey option for speedo and tacho cables.
